The Penn State Society for the Study of Religion hosts Amara Solari presenting “Performing the Passion in the Monastery of Santa Clara, Dzidzantún, Yucatán.”
In the 1590s, Franciscan friars and Maya artists collaborated to design the decorative scheme of the newly constructed mission church in Dzidzantún, Yucatán. In this talk, Amara Solari will interrogate their design and corresponding pigment selections, understanding how this native community grafted early modern ritual practices upon and within their ancient modes of ceremonial placemaking, eventually crafting a localized Indigenous Catholicism.
All are welcome to attend. Refreshments will be served.
