Wanjiru Kareithi is a postdoctoral scholar in the Office of the Associate Dean of Access and Equity in the College of Arts and Architecture at Penn State. Her work focuses on equity and inclusive leadership, with a strong academic emphasis on women’s rights in civil, political, economic, and socio-cultural contexts. Affiliated with the Department of Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies (WGSS) and the African Studies program at Penn State, her research and teaching explore group rights and gender-based legal reform, advocating for marginalized communities. As a human rights advocate from Nairobi, Kenya, Kareithi has more than twelve years of experience working with both governmental and non-governmental organizations across sub-Saharan Africa and globally. Her advocacy has centered on promoting equality, non-discrimination, and gender-sensitive human rights initiatives at regional and international levels. In addition to her extensive advocacy and research, Kareithi has taught and mentored students in human rights law and gender studies across Africa and beyond. She holds a doctor of laws degree (LLD) from the University of Pretoria, a master of laws degree (LLM) from the University of Bristol, and a bachelor of laws degree (LLB) from Kenya. She is also a member of the Kenya Bar Association.
