“Documenting Judeo-Spanish: Development, Endangerment, and Revitalization”

Abstract: This talk will provide an introduction to the Judeo-Spanish language, tracing its linguistic antecedents prior to the expulsion of Sephardic Jews in 1492 to its subsequent development in contact with non-Iberian languages, especially throughout Turkey, Greece, and the Balkans. After reviewing the nomenclature and linguistic construct of Judeo-Spanish, the talk will examine how a relatively stable language spoken throughout Sephardic speech communities became endangered and how communities today are working to preserve it. To address the former, scholarship on language endangerment will be applied to the case of Judeo-Spanish, framing its current vitality according to criteria outlined in the Ethnologue. After situating the language's contemporary status and the factors contributing to its moribundity, the talk will turn to efforts aimed at documentation as well as revitalization. This discussion will draw on research on communities of practice as well as postvernacularity to frame the current moment—and movement—among speakers and learners of Judeo-Spanish.
