Many U.S.-raised individuals from Spanish-speaking families suffer a “triple bullying”. First, the country is 80 percent monolingual in English, and many people insist that this is the only language that belongs here. Next, many Spanish teachers damage students’ linguistic self-esteem by calling their ways of speaking Spanish deformed and incorrect. Finally, perhaps most painfully, members of their own communities make fun of the ways they speak Spanish. The currently popular term “no sabo kids” makes fun of people who, though no agency of their own, did not develop strong levels of communicative ability in Spanish. It is not surprising, then, that many of our students prefer to stop speaking Spanish altogether. This talk discusses ways to push back against these narratives and empower our students to continue growing their Spanish abilities.
