Brazilian Film Series: In the Intense Now

Narrated in the first person by director João Moreira Salles, this documentary mediates upon the experiences of resistance, political upheaval, and cultural change during the tumultuous years of the global 1960s. This film-essay pairs amateur footage taken by Salles’ mother during her trip to China in 1966 with archival images of the May 1968 student uprisings in Paris, the August 1968 Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia, and marches in Rio de Janeiro protesting the military dictatorship. Together, they invite a reflection on the intensity of the political moment and its specific manifestations in distinct contexts.
