\, Turner examines the \;African American Protestantism and American
politics at the end of the Civil War and "\;challenges the idea of
black churches as having always been politically engaged. Using local ar
chives\, church and convention minutes\, and innovative Geographic Infor
mation Systems (GIS) mapping\, Turner reveals how freedpeople in Virgini
a adapted strategies for pursuing the freedom of their souls to worship
as they saw fit&mdash\;and to participate in society completely in the e
volving landscape of emancipation"\; (UNC Press).\n\nDr. Turner
\;is assistant professor of Religious Studies at Yale University. She wa
s the Richards Center'\;s postdoctoral fellow in African American His
tory in 2015-2016. She is currently completing work on a complementary d
igital history project\, Mapping Black Religion\, which invites engageme
nt with Black digital humanities&rsquo\; critiques of mapping and with i
nterpreting the relationship between Black religious community and elect
