SUMMARY:WGSS Speaker Series: Jamie Andreson
DESCRIPTION:\nKicking off the Department of Women&rsquo\;s\, Gender\, an
	d Sexuality Studies&rsquo\; fall 2023 Speaker Series\, the first guest s
peaker is Jamie Andreson\, assistant teaching professor of history and w
omen&rsquo\;s\, gender\, and sexuality studies at Penn State\, to presen
t &ldquo\;Men and Matriarchy: Feminine Performances in Afro-Brazilian Re
ligion.&rdquo\;\n\nThis talk presents key male leaders of the Afro-Brazi
lian religion Candombl&eacute\; to analyze men&rsquo\;s roles within a m
atriarchal religious structure. Candombl&eacute\; is often characterized
as a matriarchy because of the multi-generational leadership of Black p
riestesses and the adoration of African female deities. Yet the religion
offers ample opportunities for male priests and initiates\, many of who
m identify as gay\, to embrace and perform femininity. Because of these
gendered dynamics\, I argue that male priests too uphold the religion&rs
quo\;s matriarchal structure. Works by the African feminist and philosop
her Ifi Amadiume inspire the theoretical framework through an approach t
hat examines gendered dynamics rather than a dichotomy or competition be
tween patriarchal and matriarchal leadership.\n\nFor more details: https
