SUMMARY:Penn State Alumni Association Virtual Speaker Session: \"Who Am I?: Empo
wering Science Learning Through a \"Finding Your Roots\" Curriculum\" wi
	th Nina Jablonski
DESCRIPTION:\nThe &ldquo\;Finding Your Roots&rdquo\; curriculum is a joi
nt creation of Henry Louis Gates\, Jr. and Nina Jablonski and was develo
ped by a team of more than 30 scientists and educators. By focusing on t
he question of &ldquo\;Who Am I?\,&rdquo\; the curriculum inspires young
people to investigate their own genetic and genealogical ancestry as a
way of engaging them in science that is relevant and personally transfor
mative. It was originally developed for middle-school aged learners in s
ummer camp settings\, but is suitable for after-school programs and can
easily be modified to be served as modules in regular classrooms. The cu
rriculum is supported by the nine-part webisode series\, &ldquo\;Finding
Your Roots: The Seedlings\,&rdquo\; which garnered three Mid-Atlantic E
mmy Awards in 2018 and 2019.\n\nNina G. Jablonski is Evan Pugh Professor
of Anthropology at Penn State. As a biological anthropologist\, she stu
dies the human and primate evolution. She has written more than 200 scho
larly papers\, two popular books\, and one book for children. Jablonski
received her A.B. in Biology at Bryn Mawr College in 1975 and her Ph.D.
in Anthropology at the University of Washington in 1981. She is an elect
ed member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the American
Philosophical Society\, the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship\, and a
n honorary doctorate from University of Stellenbosch in South Africa for
her contribution to the worldwide fight against racism.\n\nClick here t
