SUMMARY:\"The Rhetoric of Hitler\'s \'Battle\' and Hitler\'s Rhetoric in Battle\
	"
DESCRIPTION:\nThe 2019 Kenneth Burke Memorial Lecture\n\nSponsored by th
e Center for Democratic Deliberation\n\n80 years have passed since Kenne
th Burke wrote &ldquo\;The Rhetoric of Hitler&rsquo\;s &lsquo\;Battle.&r
squo\;&rdquo\; In 1939 &mdash\; while people continued to say that Hitle
r had been matured by power\, and that he shouldn&rsquo\;t be held to hi
s previous words in Mein Kampf--Burke read Mein Kampf as an epitome of H
	itler&rsquo\;s rhetoric. Hitler\, Burke said\, had &ldquo\;swung a great
people into his wake&rdquo\; through certain recurrent rhetorical strat
egies. More recent scholarship on Hitler has shown Burke&#39\;s argument
to be both very wrong and very right. This lecture explores the strengt
hs and weaknesses of Burke&rsquo\;s analysis by emphasizing Hitler&rsquo
\;s deliberations with his generals&mdash\; a context in which a cunning
rhetor would have adopted a completely different set of rhetorical stra
tegies from those used in beer halls or massive rallies.\n\nDr. Patricia
Roberts-Miller is a Professor in the Department of Rhetoric and Writing
at the University of Texas-Austin. Her work focuses on the history\, th
eory\, and pedagogy of public argumentation. She is the author of Voices
in the Wilderness: The Paradox of the Puritan Public Sphere (University
of Alabama Press\, 1999)\, Deliberate Conflict: Composition Classes and
Political Spaces (Southern Illinois University Press\, 2004)\, Fanatica
l Schemes: Proslavery Rhetoric and the Tragedy of Consensus (University
of Alabama Press\, 2009)\, and Rhetoric and Demagoguery (The Experiment\
