Srdja Popovic: “A Magic Formula for Social Change? How Humor, Dilemma Actions, and Creative Tactics Can Save Democracy”

Srdja Popovic's talk presents material that stems from recent collaborative research he has conducted with the Center’s Director, Sophia A. McClennen, professor of international affairs and comparative literature, and Joseph Wright, professor of political science.

Srdja Popovic is the founder and executive director of the Center for Applied Nonviolent Actions and Strategies (CANVAS), located in Belgrade, Serbia. Popovic is the author of Blueprint for Revolution and co-author, with Sophia McClennen, of Pranksters vs Autocrats: Why Dilemma Actions Advance Nonviolent Activism. His latest collaborative research on the efficacy of creative tactics appeared in The Journal of Democracy. In 1998, Popovic founded the student movement “Otpor!” (“Resistance!”) which played a crucial role in ousting former Serbian dictator Slobodan Milosevic.
