DESCRIPTION:\nIn this special edition of our CLS Speaker Series\, we wil
l be screening the documentary Signing Black in America\, which teaches
us about the unique dialect of American Sign Language (ASL) that develop
ed within historically segregated African American deaf communities. The
film illustrates how Black ASL today conveys an identity and sense of b
elonging that mirrors spoken language varieties of the African American
hearing community. The documentary film screening will be followed by a
discussion facilitated by guest speaker Roxie Dummett\, an ASL instructo
r at George Mason University with extensive knowledge of Black ASL. This
