In this special edition of our CLS Speaker Series, we will be screening the documentary Signing Black in America, which teaches us about the unique dialect of American Sign Language (ASL) that developed within historically segregated African American deaf communities. The film illustrates how Black ASL today conveys an identity and sense of belonging that mirrors spoken language varieties of the African American hearing community. The documentary film screening will be followed by a discussion facilitated by guest speaker Roxie Dummett, an ASL instructor at George Mason University with extensive knowledge of Black ASL. This event is open to the public and Penn State community. Please join us for this special event!
