“Behind Every Great Man: Greco-Roman Women in Contemporary American White Nationalist Thought”
White nationalist activists conceive of themselves as noble warriors resisting invasion and degeneracy, finding ancient models in Homeric heroes, Spartan hoplites, and Roman legionaries. Against the hypervisibility of these masculine models, this lecture examines the surprising inspiration this movement takes from Greco-Roman women, including some who have long been claimed by feminist historians.
Curtis Dozier teaches in the Department of Greek and Roman Studies at Vassar College. He is the director of Pharos Doing Justice to the Classics, a website that documents appropriations of Greco-Roman antiquity by hate groups, and is the author of The White Pedestal: Greco-Roman Antiquity and White Nationalism, forthcoming from Yale University Press in 2025.
