The Sawyer Seminar Series: Birthing the Nation presents a Hybrid Research Seminar: Curtis Dozier

“The Last Stand Against Modernity: The Ancient Warrior in the Contemporary White Nationalist Imagination”

In this seminar, Curtis Dozier will present the argument of the first chapter of his forthcoming book on contemporary American white nationalism and Greco-Roman antiquity, emphasizing the similarities and continuities between the inspiration this movement takes from ancient models of masculine heroism and popular and scholarly understandings of this aspect of the ancient world.

Curtis Dozier teaches in the Department of Greek and Roman Studies at Vassar College. He is the director of Pharos: Doing Justice to the Classics, a website that documents appropriations of Greco-Roman antiquity by hate groups, and is the author of The White Pedestal: Greco-Roman Antiquity and White Nationalism, forthcoming from Yale University Press in 2025.

Please reach out to Hazel Velasco Palacios hgv5008@psu.edu if you have any questions about the event or need accommodations.
