DESCRIPTION:\nThis lecture will be presented by Nhung Tuyet Tran. She is
from the University of Toronto.\n\n \;In early modern Vietnam\, whe
n local believers used vernacular scripts and practices to recast\n\nChr
istian morality to make them legible to themselves and their fellow beli
evers\, they articulated a\n\nnew kind of communal religious identity an
d individual subjectivity which transcended the spiritual\n\nrealm and a
ffected social and writing habits of non-Christians as well. Drawing fro
m Christian\n\nbooks\, letters from local Christians\, and transcripts f
rom tribunals from the seventeenth and\n\neighteenth centuries\, Tran ex
amines how Vietnamese articulated an identity for themselves as no\n\nle
ss deserving of grace and attention than any other member of the global
church. This talk\n\nfocuses on how local believers articulated their re
ligious sensibilities as a community of believers\n\n(cá\;c bổn đạ
o 各本道) for themselves\, to the European Church leaders who seemed not to
care for\n\ntheir souls\, and against the non-believers (kẻ vô\; đ
