SUMMARY:Reading New Books: Gestural Listening In and Beyond the Classroom by Lau
	ra Feibush
DESCRIPTION:\nAttuned to the subtle choreographies of the classroom\, Ge
stural Listening In and Beyond the Classroom investigates how students a
nd instructors show that they are listening to each other—and\, sometime
s\, that they are not. Feibush uses findings from a classroom study to i
nform an insightful discussion of respect\, resistance\, and self-regula
tion as the key dynamics that characterize listening in contemporary edu
cational spaces\; the book then reveals how the gestures of listening re
fract across identity categories in ways that have surprising effects on
how classroom participants respond to one another. The book further exp
lores how gestural listening's quiet yet profound influence can elucidat
e many sites of interaction: in-person and virtual academic settings as
well as those far beyond the educational space\, such as scenes of prote
st\, worship\, and performance.\n\nLaura Feibush is assistant professor
of rhetoric and composition at Penn State Harrisburg\, where she teaches
	 first-year writing\, public and professional writing\, writing across m
edia\, and writing in the disciplines. Her research\, which focuses on l
istening as rhetorical praxis\, has been published in Peitho\, Compositi
on Forum\, and Literacy in Composition Studies.\n\nRegister: https://for
