SUMMARY:Professional Development Power Hour with Dr. Vilna Bashi Treitler: \"Joy
	 and Pain: Surviving Academic Life\"
DESCRIPTION:\nDr. Vilna Bashi Treitler&nbsp\;is a sociologist and visual
artist\, as well as Professor and Chair of the Department of Black Stud

Barbara. She is the 2020 recipient of the&nbsp\;Cox-Johnson-Frasier awar
d bestowed by the American Sociological Association&nbsp\;for scholarshi
p in service to social justice.\n\nHer book\,&nbsp\;The Ethnic Project:
Transforming Racial Fiction into Ethnic Factions\, a comparative histori
cal analysis of US ethnic groups&rsquo\; racialization\,&nbsp\;was honor
ed by inclusion in the&nbsp\;Zora Canon\, a list of the best 100 books w
ritten by an African American woman.&nbsp\;Bashi Treitler&rsquo\;s schol
arship theorizes about the dynamics and hierarchies involved in socioeco
	nomic processes like nation\, race\, ethnicity\, and migration.\n\nDr. T

rviving the academy as a member of several &quot\;minoritized&quot\; gro
ups: she&#39\;s a child of immigrants\, first in her family to go to col
lege and graduate school\, and a black woman to boot. She also struggles
with introversion and other social challenges\; the academy certainly s
tigmatized open discussions about mental health.\n\nHow can we honor our
personal and professional needs\, mentor or care for those around us\,
and value grace\, ethics\, and intellect while working in institutions t
hat seem to only measure academic products when evaluating our worth? Le
t&#39\;s talk and see if we can find some answers.\n\nPlease register in
