Locality, language and memes as coping mechanisms in the time of war

Memes, defined as common ideas and practices that spread naturally through different generations are a pivotal part of a common identity. What people collectively "ought to know" from stereotypes to jokes often reflects how society remembers its past and expects from the future. Due to a plethora of issues, cultural anthropology in Ukraine is very past-oriented; studies of contemporary folklore and culture are quite rare. However, nowadays some aspects of the past became a way to interpret the present. One can say that Ukrainian society is creating a new collective image of itself using language and shared experiences as the central parts of that image. My talk is about our use of common tongue and cultural memes and how it helps Ukrainian society to cope with anxieties, brought about by daily Russian terror.
