SUMMARY:2024 Center for Language Acquisition Language Teaching Forum: Natalie Am
	gott
DESCRIPTION:\nSpeaker:\n\nNatalie Amgott\, Ph.D. [she/her]\n\nAssociate
Director of Online Language Learning\, Department of Modern Languages\,
Carnegie Mellon University\n\nTitle: “Building a Multimodal Language Cur
riculum to Enhance Student Agency and Motivation”\n\nAbstract:\n\nIn thi
s interactive workshop\, participants will explore how to design engagin
g language learning curriculum through digital multimodal projects as su
mmative assessments. We will discuss the benefits of moving beyond tradi
tional written assessments to promote more thorough language learning wi
th tasks like vlogs\, blogs\, and digital poetry.\n\nThe workshop will e
quip participants with a backwards design approach\, starting with the d
esired learning outcomes and media to then craft multimodal project rubr
ics. We will explore practical strategies for fostering student agency a
nd motivation\, as well as critical digital literacy\, through these pro
jects. We will also discuss how AI tools can be leveraged in both the cr
eation of the rubrics for these projects and to scaffold the multimodal
design process.\n\nParticipants will learn how to convert in-person acti
vities to engaging online or flipped classroom formats\, and vice versa.
By the end of the workshop\, participants will be able to build a proje
ct-based\, multimodal unit for a language course that fosters student ag
ency\, motivation\, and growth mindset.\n\nBio:\n\nNatalie Amgott is ass
ociate director of online language learning at Carnegie Mellon Universit
y\, where she also teaches French and applied linguistics courses. Her r
esearch focuses on language learning through designing multimodal projec
ts\, including blogs\, video blogs (vlogs)\, and multimedia poetry. Nata
lie’s teaching philosophy adheres to multiliteracies\, or incorporating
multiple channels of communication to explore\, discuss\, and design mul
timedia projects. She is recipient of the ACTFL Early Career Research Aw
ard and has published in Foreign Language Annals\, System\, TESOL Quarte
rly\, and L2 Journal. She has also published an online Spanish course fo
r beginners and an intermediate online French course.\n\nFor more detail
