SUMMARY:“Kenya\'s Running Women: A History” by Michelle Sikes
DESCRIPTION:\nCollaborative Colloquia: Reading New Books in the Humaniti
es by Penn State Faculty\n\nKenya's Running Women: A History details the
triumphs and challenges faced by the pioneer generation of women who pa
ved the way for Kenya's reputation as an international powerhouse in wom
en's track and field\, from the advent of Kenya’s athletics program in t
he colonial era through the professionalization of running in the 1980s
and 1990s. The book demonstrates the necessity of including women in the
histories of African sport\, and of incorporating sport into studies of
African gender and nation-building.\n\nPlease register at this link by
Wednesday\, October 23.\n\nThis reading group invites faculty at all car
eer stages across the university to share their latest monographs in the
humanities with colleagues and members of the community. Copies of sele
cted books will be provided to reading group members to read before the
meeting. This format allows for a more conversational tone and provides
an opportunity to engage with the work more deeply.\n\nBy highlighting t
he recent work of Penn State faculty\, we hope to forge new connections
and inspire interdisciplinary collaborations\, both by raising awareness
of our colleagues’ latest research and providing a space for dialogue t
hat goes beyond conventional book presentations.\n\nThe number of partic
ipants will be capped at 15\, and a limited number of hard copies for mo
