SUMMARY:Unknown Past: Layla Murad, the Jewish-Muslim Star of Egypt
DESCRIPTION:\nIn this talk\, Professor Hanan Hammad\n\nemploys the life
and legacy of Layla Murad\,\n\none of the most beloved and remembered\n\
nArab singing stars in the twentieth century\, to analyze politics of se
xuality\, ethnicity\, socio-cultural interaction between Muslims and Jew
s\, and the crucial role popular culture played in constructing an exclu
sive Arab-Islamic Egyptian identity. Born into a\n\nJewish family in 191
8 and converted to\n\nIslam in the late 1940s\, Layla Murad\n\nprovides
an excellent example to\n\nshowcase that Jews of Egypt and the\n\nArab E
ast broadly lived within a web of\n\nemotional\, social\, and institutio
nal relations with multiple and fluid identities\,\n\nrather than a narr
ow religious identity.\n\nHanan Hammad\, professor of history and foundi
ng director of Middle East studies at Texas Christian University.\n\nThi
s talk is the keynote lecture for the&nbsp\;&ldquo\;Reimagining Jewish L
	ife in the Modern Middle East\, 1800&ndash\;Present: Culture\, Society\,
	 and History&rdquo\; workshop.\n\nFor more details: https://events.la.ps
