Screens of Defiance: Ukrainian Film Series—“Volcano”

Volcano (2018) is a Ukrainian-German-Monaco production and the feature directorial debut of Roman Bondarchuk. Through its main character, Lukas, an interpreter from Kyiv stranded in the region of Kherson that he was to help monitor for the OSCU Special Mission, the film examines the lives of people on the southern Ukrainian steppe who live in anarchic freedom, seemingly forgotten by the outside world. The screening will be followed by a discussion with Dr. Yuliya Ladygina, Helena Rubinstein University Endowed Fellow in the Humanities and assistant professor of Russian and global studies at Penn State.
