SUMMARY:Gregory Nagy “A rethinking of Sappho in the light of the newest fragment
	s”
DESCRIPTION:\nThis lecture presents a reassessment of Sappho on the basi
s of\n\n(1) the newest fragments that have just recently been published\
, including the so-called “Brothers Song”\n\nand\n\n(2) what we know abo
ut the history of the reception of Sappho in Lesbos\, her native island\
	, and\, later\, in Athens.\n\nAn essential aspect of this reception is t
he tradition of performing the songs of Sappho in the context of\n\n(A)
choral and sympotic performance in Lesbos\n\nand\n\n(B) sympotic and cit
harodic performance in Athens.\n\nIn the sympotic and the citharodic con
texts\, it is argued\, the songs of Sappho have undergone variations tha
t transcend\n\nwhat had once been a primarily choral context. But one fe
ature remains invariable: the role of Sappho as a virtuoso singer.\n\nFo
