SUMMARY:Freedom is a Place: The Struggle for Sovereignty in Palestine
DESCRIPTION:\nThe Middle East is represented in the media by reports of
terrorism\, war\, and peace processes. While\n\nthe dramatic violence of
war is a real and fundamental aspect of the civilian experience in Pale
stine\,\n\nSmith argues that the everyday violence of dispossession is f
ar more prevalent in Palestinian lives\n\nthan the immediate impacts of
war or invasion. Occupation\, a legal category intended to describe a\n\
ntemporary state of affairs\, has dragged on for decades\, and may conti
nue indefinitely. In Palestine\,\n\noccupation is a totalizing process\,
affecting all aspects of Palestinians&rsquo\; lives.\n\nIn this talk\,
Smith will describe the political economies and micro-geographies of occ
upation:\n\nsystematic structures of control designed to dispossess and
displace. He will explore the ways in\n\nwhich geography\, history\, cul
ture\, and politics create a dynamism that allows dispossession to\n\nco
ntinue without end\, and I will recount the everyday forms of resistance
and solidarity that\n\nchallenge the denial of a state to a people.\n\n
