SUMMARY:Dr. Navin Viswanathan (CSD, Penn State)
DESCRIPTION:\n“Studying Spoken Language Processes in Everyday Listening
	Situations”\n\nNavin Viswanathan\, Ph.D.\,  Associate Professor\, Penn S
tate Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders\n\nFriday\, Sept
	ember 1\, 9:00–10:30 a.m. EDT\, Foster Auditorium\, 102 Paterno Library\
n\nCurrent accounts of speech perception and production are mainly based
on findings obtained under ideal\, usually non-communicative\, conditio
ns. While these findings have provided a rich understanding of the archi
tecture and\n\ntime course of spoken language processes\, there is a cri
tical need to evaluate how well such accounts generalize to conditions o
f real world language use. In this talk\, Navin Viswanathan will share a
series of experiments that examine speech perception under conditions o
f adverse listening. He will briefly branch out to describe an applicati
on of this line of work. He will conclude the talk by examining theoreti
cal issues that needs to be addressed for an improved understanding of s
poken language processes in ecologically-typical conditions.\n\nFor more
