SUMMARY:Dr. David Quinto-Pozos, University of Texas at Austin
DESCRIPTION:“Signed Language Communication Challenges Considering Langua
	ge Exposure”\n\nDavid Quinto-Pozos\, Ph.D.\n\nProfessor\, Linguistics\n\
nUniversity of Texas at Austin\n\nThis presentation will consider lingui
stic profiles of school-aged deaf and hard of hearing children who prese
nt with signed language communication challenges. An overview of previou
s research on the types of communication challenges that have been docum
ented for deaf signing children and adults will serve as an empirical fo
undation for considering the perspectives of US-based professionals (ASL
	 specialists\, teachers\, SLPs\, audiologists\, school psychologists\, e
tc.) who work with school-aged deaf children. A critical question consid
ering communication challenges that will be considered is whether childr
en with language deprivation (i.e.\, delayed and/or limited exposure to
a signed language) might exhibit communication profiles that are similar
to those children who have communication challenges despite having had
robust exposure to a signed language from infancy.\n\nFor more details:
