	mas (now part of the U.S. Virgin Islands)\, Vesey was subsequently broug
	ht to Charleston\, South Carolina. Allowed to keep portions of his earni
	ngs from various jobs\, he purchased his freedom after winning a lottery
	. He then embarked on a revolutionary path\, which led through the Phila
	delphia-founded African Methodist Episcopal Church\, to overthrow slaver
	&mdash\;a project linked to the Haitian and French revolutions. Disastro
	usly\, the plot was betrayed\, and Vesey and dozens of fellow revolution
	aries were executed. Their legacy would live on in the black liberation
