SUMMARY:Collecting the Ancestors: skeletons and mummies and their history in rec
onstructing health and medical practices in the pre-Hispanic Andes
DESCRIPTION:\nCollecting the Ancestors: skeletons and mummies and their
history in reconstructing health and medical practices in the pre-Hispan
	ic Andes\n\nSpeaker : John Verano\,&nbsp\;Professor of Anthropology\, Tu
lane University\n\nBeginning in the nineteenth century\, Peruvian\, Euro
pean and North American explorers and archaeologists collected human rem
ains from burial caves in the highlands and cemeteries on the desert coa
st of the Andes. In Peru\, collectors found skulls showing evidence of t
repanation (skull surgery) in pre-Hispanic burial houses and caves. Thes
e medical practices were brought to world-wide attention by archaeologis
ts like Julio Tello\, a descendent of those medical ancestors in the cen
tral highlands\, who devoted the rest of his life to excavating archaeol
ogical sites and building museum collections of ancestral mummies and sk
ulls. This talk will look at how the study of human remains played an im
portant role in documenting health conditions and medical practices in t
he pre-Hispanic Andes\, and how these studies continue to flourish today
through the work of a new generation of young bioarchaeologists.\n\n	Th
is keynote event&nbsp\; is supported by the Humanities in the World Init
iatives Faculty Invites program\n\nCo- sponsors:&nbsp\;History Departmen
