SUMMARY:CLS Speaker Series - Michele Diaz (Penn State University) Neural and Be
havioral Aspects of Language Production and Aging
DESCRIPTION:Neural and Behavioral Aspects of Language Production and Agi
ng\n\nAlthough decline in cognitive functions is often observed with agi
ng\, language functions show a pattern of both impaired and spared perfo
rmance. &nbsp\;Semantic processes\, such as vocabulary\, are well mainta
ined throughout adulthood. In contrast\, older adults show impairments i
n phonological aspects of language production such as in increased slips
of the tongue and increased pauses during speech. This asymmetric patte
rn suggests a fundamental difference in the cognitive and neural organiz
ation of these two language abilities. &nbsp\;Moreover\, language produc
tion abilities interact with general cognitive functions such as inhibit
ion and planning.&nbsp\; In this talk\, I will discuss our most recent w
ork which incorporated a phonological go-no go task to examine the inter
action between language production and executive function abilities. &nb
sp\;I will also discuss our work examining how cognition\, behavior\, an
d neural factors relate to each other and how they contribute to languag
e function in healthy younger and older adults.\n\nFor more details: htt
