Beyond Language Science: Skills for Transitioning Out of the Academy
After finishing a Ph.D. in Spanish and Language Science in 2014, Amelia J. Dietrich was awarded the Mellon/ACLS Public Fellowship to work at non-profit, membership organization The Forum on Education Abroad. As Associate Director for Programs and Resources, she edits the academic journal Frontiers: The Interdisciplinary Journal of Study Abroad, develops resources to support high-quality study abroad programming, leads data collection and reporting efforts, and facilitates professional development workshops. She has presented her post-language-science work at conferences in Austin, Houston, Seattle, and Washington, D.C. and will publish a chapter in the upcoming Routledge Handbook of Study Abroad Research and Practice. Dr. Dietrich's presentation will focus on her transition from academia to the non-profit association, highlighting the transferable skills she gained during her years as a CLS graduate student and offering advice to students and faculty mentors who may be considering the same transition.
