SUMMARY:Center for Language Acquisition Research Methods Workshop: Xiaofei Lu
DESCRIPTION:\n&ldquo\;Integrating corpus- and genre-based approaches in
academic writing research and pedagogy&rdquo\;\n\nXiaofei Lu\, Penn Stat
e\n\nAn emerging body of academic writing research has employed corpus-b
ased genre analysis (CGA) to systematically describe the linguistic real
izations of different rhetorical functions in various genres of academic
writing and documented the potential of CGA activities for promoting no
vice writers&rsquo\; academic genre competence. Different from analyses/
activities that focus on either identifying key linguistic features or a
nalyzing the rhetorical structures of different genres of academic writi
ng in isolation\, CGA highlights the connection between key linguistic f
eatures characterizing different genres of academic writing and the rhet
orical or communicative functions they are used to realize. This worksho
p introduces participants to the rationale and agenda of the CGA approac
h\, findings of recent studies adopting this approach\, and methods for
employing this approach in academic writing research and pedagogy. Topic
s to be covered include:\n\n	CGA approach overview: rationale\, agenda\,
and recent research findings\n	The notion of genre competence and the b
asics of rhetorical function analysis\n	Compilation of specialized acade
mic writing corpora\n	Automated tools for extracting linguistic features
from written corpora\n	Methods for matching linguistic features to rhet
