SUMMARY:CLA Research Methods Workshop- Peter de Costa
DESCRIPTION:\nTitle:&nbsp\;Ethics and Narrative Inquiry: Methodological
	Considerations\n\nInstructor:&nbsp\;&nbsp\;Peter de Costa\, Michigan Sta
te University\n\nAbstract:&nbsp\;In light of growing calls to ensure tha
t ethical standards are preserved in applied linguistics research (De Co
sta et al.\,2020\; Isbell et al.\, 2022)\, I examine how ethical researc
h practices can be enacted in and through our interactions with research
participants. I start with an overview of techniques and instruments th
an we can deploy to this end before recommending general resources to wh
ich the workshop participants can turn. Next\, I explore how narrative i
nquiry is fast innovating in ways to include\, among other things\, smal
l stories\, autoethnography and photo narratives. In the third part of m
y workshop\, I focus specifically on how ethical practices can be observ
ed in narrative inquiry both at the macroethical level of gaining instit
utional approval and at the microethical level of examining how narrativ
e researchers negotiate ethical dilemmas that emerge before\, during\, a
nd after the investigative process. I close the workshop by mapping out
future directions for this increasingly vibrant &ndash\; but still relat
ively underexplored &ndash\; area of research within our field.\n\nFor m
