“Change and Continuity in Turkish Foreign Policy during the Erdoğan Presidency (2003–2023): The Example of Afghanistan”

This presentation focuses first on the key determinants of the Turkish Foreign Policy during the JDP Era under the President of Erdoğan and explores change and continuity in Turkish foreign policy objectives in a longitudinal analysis from 2003 until 2023. In this vein, this presentation examines the historical overview of theoretical foundations of Turkish Foreign Policy through the lenses of Idealism/Liberalism, Social Constructivism, and Realism.

The second part of the presentation demonstrates change and continuity of Turkish Foreign Policy in the specific case of Afghanistan, and answers the following questions: (a) What does NATO withdrawal from Afghanistan mean for Turkey and (b) How did Turkey respond to Taliban takeover?
