Career Conversation: International Nonprofit and Local Development

Interested in a career in nonprofit or philanthropy? Curious about working abroad? Join alumna Sydney Wheeler to hear about her career journey throughout the industry.

Sydney Wheeler '12

Sydney Wheeler graduated from Penn State in 2012 with majors in Human Geography, French and Francophone Studies, and Global and International Studies. As a student, she had the opportunity to study in France and in Senegal through Penn State's study abroad programs. She then moved to France to work as an English language assistant in disadvantaged rural neighborhoods before pursuing a master's degree in political science at Université Lumière Lyon II. After changing programs, she completed two internships at local and international nonprofit organizations and earned her master's degree in international project management with a specialization in humanitarian action and international relations in 2015 from l'Ecole Supérieur de Commerce et de Développement 3A. Sydney has since had the pleasure of working with large international nonprofits, such as Humanity & Inclusion (prev. Handicap International) and smaller, more locally-focused groups such as Helen Keller Europe, where she has developed a new eye health program in France and is currently program director.

Sydney lives in Paris with her husband and two cats and in her spare time, enjoys being outside, gardening and baking. She also volunteers when possible, with local CSAs and refugee and immigration service organizations.
