The Perils of Partnership: Industry Influence, Institutional Integrity, and Public Health  (Oxford University Press, 2019)

by Jonathan H. Marks

Thursday, October 17, 2019

Henderson 110, 3:30 - 5:00 p.m.

Countless public health agencies are trying to solve our most intractable public health problems—among them, the obesity and opioid epidemics—by partnering with corporations responsible for creating or exacerbating those problems. We are told industry must be part of the solution. But is it time to challenge the partnership paradigm and the popular narratives that sustain it? The Perils of Partnership makes that case and offers a novel framework for addressing the ethical challenges posed by public-private partnerships.

The following panelists will discuss this important new book.

  • Moderator: Ted Toadvine, Nancy Tuana Director of the Rock Ethics Institute and Associate Professor of Philosophy at Penn State
  •
  • Author: Jonathan H. Marks, Director of the Bioethics Program and Associate Professor of Bioethics, Humanities, Law, and Philosophy at Penn State
  •
  • Critic: Lisa M. Lee, Associate Vice President for Scholarly Integrity and Research Compliance at Virginia Tech and former Executive Director of President Obama's Bioethics Commission
  •
  • Critic: Leland Glenna, Professor of Rural Sociology and Science, Technology, and Society at Penn State

Welcome by Clarence Lang, Susan Welch Dean of the College of the Liberal Arts.

After the event will be a book signing and reception from 5:00 to 6:00pm.

Sponsors for this event are the Rock Ethics Institute, Bioethics Program, Department of Philosophy, School of Public Policy, College of the Liberal Arts, College of Health and Human Development, Penn State Law, School of International Affairs, and Huck Institutes of the Life Sciences.
