“ATHENS AND SPARTA OF THE NEW WORLD: THE CLASSICAL PASSIONS OF SANTO DOMINGO”

A talk by Dr. Dan-el Padilla Peralta (Princeton University), hosted by the Department of Classics and Ancient and Mediterranean Studies and the Latina/o Studies Program. In this talk, Dr. Padilla Peralta will examine the reception and appropriation of classical Greece and Rome in the Dominican Republic, along the long arc of its trajectory from colony to nation. The talk will argue that this appropriation is bound to a racialized cultural-nationalistic program that continues to exert a powerful subterranean influence on Dominican and Dominican-American debates about statehood and race.
