SUMMARY:“An Archaeology of Areítos: Sonic Performance in the Antilles and the Is
	thmo-Colombian Region”
DESCRIPTION:\nChoric dance ceremonies\, known as areítos\, were document
ed in the sixteenth century as celebrations of living\, ancestral\, and
mythological individuals among Indigenous societies of the circum-Caribb
ean\, a region spanning the Antilles and Isthmo-Colombian areas. This pr
esentation employs archaeology\, iconography\, and ethnohistory to evalu
ate areítos from approximately 800 CE to the sixteenth century. Tied to
ancestral memory and elaborate funerary rites\, such ceremonies made the
inaudible audible\, allowing mortals to hear voices or messages from an
cestral or divine entities. Historical accounts further show that areíto
s and related\, musical performances presented large-scale oral historie
s commemorating elite achievements and mourning the deceased. These sixt
eenth-century events\, saturated with Indigenous politics and spirituali
ty\, arose from traditions with a long history of music\, song\, and dan
	ce.\n\nFor more details: https://events.la.psu.edu/event/archaeology-of-
