Afro-Brazilian Samba and Capoeira Day!!

We are excited to announce that Afro-Brazilian Samba and Capoeira are coming to Penn State! Join us on Saturday, March 16th starting at 10:00 AM in the HUB-Flex Theatre for a Capoeira and Samba workshops with special guests Mestre Efraim Silva and Thelma Ladeira, of the Connecticut Capoeira and Dance Company. Capoeira is an Afro-Brazilian martial art incorporating dance, acrobatic moves, and music with origins in Brazil dating back to the arrival of slaves from Angola in the sixteenth century. Samba, the dance and music synonymous with Rio's Carnival and Brazilian national culture, also has its origins in Afro-Brazilian rhythms, movements, and traditions. Come learn more about these rich cultural traditions by learning the basic movements and trying your skills in the roda.

Free admission - all are welcome! Please wear comfortable exercise clothes and bring water.

Schedule:
10:00 AM – 11:30 AM : Capoeira and Samba workshop Part 1

11:30 AM – 12:30 PM : Performance and Food Tasting (catered by Brazilian Munchies)

12:30 PM – 2:00 PM : Capoeira and Samba workshop Part 2

The workshop is made possible thanks to generous support from the Penn State departments of Spanish, Italian and Portuguese, African American Studies, and Anthropology, the Latin American Studies Program, Liberal Arts Undergraduate Studies, Global Programs, and the Africana Research Center. If you have any questions, please contact Kristina Douglass (kdouglass@psu.edu) or Krista Brune (kub290@psu.edu).
