African Studies Global Virtual Forum: Decoloniality and Southern Epistemologies—Rachel Wicaksono

“A Decade and a Half of Mapping Applied Linguistics: What has Changed and What is Next?”

Abstract
The first edition of Mapping Applied Linguistics: A Guide for Students and Practitioners was published in 2011. A second edition came out in 2017, and the third edition is currently in print, with a publication date (hopefully!) of September 2025.

In this talk, I reflect on the origins, aims and processes of writing the first edition; the changes in our thinking that were reflected in the second edition; and the developments in the discipline that we wanted to address in the third edition. There will be no fourth edition 😊. But since we submitted the manuscript of the third edition, lots has already changed again: in our thinking about language and applied linguistics; in our institutional allegiances; and in our predictions for the future.

Please come to the talk ready to share both the changes in your thinking about, and your predictions for, the study of language and the part that it is believed to play in ‘real world’ problems and their solutions.
