SUMMARY:AFI Feminist Dialogue: “Traversing Uncharted Terrain: The Development of
a Gender Studies Programme at the University of Limpopo” with Samukezi
	Mrubula-Ngwenya
DESCRIPTION:\nIn an effort to address gender-based ills\, the faculty of
humanities at the University of Limpopo in South Africa took advantage
of the new Generation of Academic Programme (nGAP) initiated by the nati
onal Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) in 2017 and appo
inted a young African female lecturer to spearhead the development of th
e Gender Studies Programme. In the same year\, the Department of Cultura
l and Political Studies asked the nGAP lecturer to teach an already exis
ting Gender Studies module to postgraduate students. In this dialogue\,
Samukezi Mrubula-Ngwenya\, Ph.D.\, shares her reflections on having to c
reate modules at the University of Limpopo to revamp a programme that wa
s no longer feasible. The two majors in this newly revised programme are
History and Gender Studies (Bachelor of Arts Gender Studies and History
	). This is a three-year undergraduate programme. Mrubula-Ngwenya intends
to share and get ideas on the gender studies modules to make sure that
they are grounded in African feminism and Pan-Africanism. The envisioned
bachelor of arts degree (Gender Studies and History) will be offered fo
r the first time in 2025.\n\nSamukezi Mrubula-Ngwenya\, senior lecturer
at the University of Limpopo\, is a social justice activist who advocate
s for Lesbian\, Bisexual\, and Queer (LBQ) rights in South Africa. She h
as a doctorate in political science from the University of Limpopo\, whe
re she lectures and convenes the Gender Studies Program.\n\nFor more det
