The Renaissance of the Activist Athlete

Join Penn State's McCourtney Institute for Democracy and the College of the Liberal Arts at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. for a lecture on the past, present, and future of activism among African-American athletes — from Tommie Smith and John Carlos at the 1968 Olympics to Colin Kaepernick and his contemporaries.

The lecture will be presented by Abraham Khan, the Laurence and Lynne Brown-McCourtney Early Career Professor in the McCourtney Institute for Democracy and Assistant Professor of African American Studies and Communication Arts and Sciences. Abe specializes in research on civic engagement and African American politics and social life, with a particular emphasis on black athletes and the history of sports in the United States. Broadly stated, his teaching and research considers the extent to which sport offers productive contributions to struggles for social justice.
