Richard B. Lippin Lecture in Ethics: Ted Chiang
"The Incompatibility Between Generative AI and Art"

Award-winning author Ted Chiang, whose stories probe the moral dimensions of technology, will deliver the 2026 Richard B. Lippin Lecture in Ethics.

Chiang is the acclaimed author of Stories of Your Life and Others and Exhalation: Stories, collections that explore how innovations in artificial intelligence, biotechnology, memory, and language shape human values and responsibilities. His novella Story of Your Life inspired the Academy Award-nominated film Arrival, and his work has earned multiple Hugo, Nebula, and Locus awards.

Hosted by the Rock Ethics Institute, this lecture highlights the institute’s theme for the year, Ethical Technologies. This initiative underscores that technology is never only about tools, but also about the choices societies make in designing and using them. Chiang’s visit offers an opportunity for scholars, students, and the public to reflect on how emerging technologies affect justice, responsibility, and humanity’s future.
