African Studies Brown Bag Series-Unrealized Synergies: Integrating Photographs with Qualitative Research

Despite the power of images in shaping how we understand the world, photography remains underused in social science research. In this talk, documentary photographer Rubin explores how photographs can deepen qualitative inquiry and foster richer interdisciplinary collaborations. Drawing from his work on the global rise of diabetes in Senegal and Sierra Leone, Rubin makes the case for integrating visual methods into research while addressing the practical and ethical challenges involved.
